Obituary

Michael Anthony "Mac" McCarthy, 69, of Defiance, passed away unexpectedly on September 11, 2026.

Mac was born on October 30, 1956 to Philip and Barbra (Brokaw) McCarthy in Defiance, Ohio. He was a 1975 graduate of Defiance High School and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1975-1979, where he was stationed in Cape Canaveral, Florida. On September 21, 1991 he married the love of his life, Karen Andrew who survives.

Mac was a computer geek, and had a vast knowledge of computers and games. He was an active member of Florida United Methodist Church, where he used his knowledge to operate as their Media and Tech Coordinator. Mac was a member of the AmVets Post #1991 and Defiance Moose Lodge #2094. He worked for Hornish Group as a dispatcher for 34 years until his retirement. Mac fulfilled a life long dream and bought his dream car, a 1967 Mercury Cougar. In addition to his love of computers, he also enjoyed music and spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many great friends.

Mac is survived by his wife Karen McCarthy, stepson Jared (Deanna) Hull, stepdaughter Stacie (John) Zachrich, grandchildren, Abigail Hull, Jacob Hull, and Isaac Zachrich, his sisters, Kathy McCarthy and Patricia (Shawn) Weible, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James McCarthy, and sister Elizabeth Held.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026 at 11:00 am at Florida United Methodist Church, with Pastor Charles Schmunk officiating. Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements.
