Melvin L. Corwin, age 89 of Defiance, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born in Brunersburg on July 17, 1934 to the late William and Verna (Bruner) Corwin. Melvin was a 1952 graduate of Sherwood High School with 13 students in his graduating class. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. On February 8, 1958 he married Dixie (Mast) Corwin, who preceded him in death on August 16, 2005.
Melvin was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Defiance. He worked at Diehl Inc., BF Goodrich, Brown's Bakery, and for 26 years at General Motors until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques, going to garage sales, and watching football. Melvin loved to share stories and family photos with his fellow residents at The Laurels of Defiance, and attending his grandkids sporting events through the years. His most cherished moments were spent with his family.
Melvin is survived by his daughters, Carol (Mark) Poulson of Ney, Karen (Keith Ruffner) Sims of Bryan, Lisa (Jeffery) Berry of Sherwood, and Lori (Craig) Polter of Ney, seven grandchildren; Brett Sims, Brittany (Adam) Wheeler, Kelsey (Aaron) Davis, Tyler Coressel (Shabrie Moyer), April Coressel, Mallory (Nathan) Drewes and Cade Polter, and eight great-grandchildren; Madeline, Ruby and Hazel Coressel, Adalee, Bellamy and Finley Wheeler, Henry and Dawson Davis. He also leaves behind his sister, Arlene Wetter of Florida, Ohio, sister-in-law Evelyn Zam of Oregon, Ohio, his special friend Victoria Fisher of Payne, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence, Robert, William, Gerald, Ronald and Marvin Corwin, and three sisters, Leona Wilder, Luella Beardsley and Betty Harrison. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson-Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home, with Celebrant Deb Miller officiating. Melvin will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery with Military honors conducted by VFW #3360. Memorials are suggested to CHP Defiance Hospice, VFW #3360 Honor Guard, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences can be given at www.Schafferfh.com.
