Matthew Michael
Zipfel
September 5, 1969 – June 10, 2026
Matthew Michael Zipfel, 56, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on June 10, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Matt was born in Defiance on September 5, 1969 to Michael and Rita (Egler) Zipfel. Matt graduated from Defiance High School and earned an associate degree from the University of Toledo. He spent more than 30 years working as a laborer at Defiance Stamping and GT Technologies.
Matt lived a full life on his own terms in a way that made room for good times, good people, and plenty of stories along the way. He loved spending time outdoors with family and friends. Bonfires in the backyard, shooting at targets and cans, fishing, and squirrel hunting filled many of his days over the years. In more recent years, he found enjoyment in growing all kinds of indoor and outdoor plants. Matt was incredibly generous with family and friends and would have done just about anything for the people he cared about-as long as it didn’t involve dressing up and going out. While he spent his time with his own cat named “Dog,” Matt also had a soft spot for the neighborhood cats. He loved making people laugh and was always joking around, playing tricks, buying outrageous gifts, or trying to pull one over on his children, nieces, and nephews. He believed in being honest and straightforward and never pretended to be someone he wasn’t. Matt was fortunate to have a close group of friends who spent many good times with him, and helped carry him through the rough ones. Their loyalty, laughter, and support meant more than words can say.
He is survived by his children, Kelsey (Ben), Riley (Briana), and Kaylee; his mother, Rita Zipfel; his sisters, Elizabeth (Steve) and Anna (Weston); his grandchildren, Ben, Charlotte, and Hallie; and his nieces and nephews, Olivia (Nic), Reid, Cole, Izzy, Ellie, and Ivy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Zipfel; Grandparents Rudolph and Florence Egler, and Herbert and Marian Zipfel.
Matt’s love for his family was unconditional. He will be deeply missed by his family and those close to him. He will be remembered for his charisma, strength, humor, and deep love for his family. Matt’s memory will live on in the lives he touched and the family he cherished.
A celebration of Matt’s life will be held at the home of a family member on Friday, June 19. Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements.
Memorial contributions in Matt’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or Elara Caring, 1018 Ralston Avenue, Suite 107, Defiance, Ohio 43512.
