Mary E. Zirkle Mary E. Zirkle, age 93, of Defiance, passed away Saturday, March 1st, 2014 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. She was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on January 11, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Samuel G. and Margaret Edna (Greer) Zirkle. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She had worked as an Elementary teacher at Defiance and Toledo Public Schools and retired in 1984. Mary was the secretary of the American Association of University Women, over 30 years. She worked at the schoolhouse at the Sauder Village, SPARKS and Children at Risk. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and mentored at schools. She was a member of the honorary teachers - Alpha Delta Kappa and a life member of the Defiance County and Ohio Retired Teachers Associations, Ohio State Alumni and University of Colorado Alumni. Surviving are 14 nieces and nephews including William (Karen) Zirkle of Defiance and John (Jenny) Zirkle of Findlay, She was preceded in death by brothers; Lewis, John, Samuel and Richard Zirkle and a sister Margaret Schwarz. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. april 12, 2014 in Zion Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Haverstock Cemetery, Zanesville, IN.
