Mary A Whitney Mary A Whitney, 97, of Defiance, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010, at her residence. She was born in Holgate, Ohio on June 7, 1913, she was the daughter of the late John and Celia (Flowers) Kelly. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a 1931 graduate of Holgate High School. She graduated in 1934 from Mercy College of Northwest Ohio, Toledo, as a registered nurse. She was member of the Mercy School Alumni. Mary worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, the Toledo Health Department, Defiance Hospital in obstetrics for 30 years, and Leisure Oaks Nursing Home for eight years. Mary married William F. Whitney on Jan. 22, 1940 and he died July 22, 1969. Surviving is a son: John T. Whitney, of Defiance. 5 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Layton; two brothers, J. Franklin Kelly and Paul Kelly; and a sister, Eileen Gustwiller. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a;m on Wednesday , September 15, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Father Tim Kummerer officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8 Tuesday at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home where there will be a rosary service at 7:00 p:m. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens.
