Mary E. Ayers, 89, of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at the Laurels of Defiance.

She was born on May 17, 1925 to John and Mary (Bick) Schudel of Defiance, Ohio. In 1946 she married John L. Ayers, who proceeded her in death in 1987.

Mary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Defiance, was a former Sunday School teacher, a member of the church choir and Ruth Circle group. She fibbed about her age to join the Marine Corps in 1942 at age 17. She served in the Women's Rescue Division and the Central Procurement Division in Chicago, Illinois.

Mary is survived by her sons, Richard W. (Linda) Ayers of Hicksville, and Larry G. (Debbi) Ayers, Robert E (Patti) Ayers, and Danny P (Catherine) Ayers, all of Defiance, and daughter, Vicki (Tom) Hanna of Defiance, 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Schudel, and husband, John L Ayers.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 7, 2014, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, Ohio, and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 8, 2014, 11:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, Defiance, with  Pastor Justin McCall officiating.

Burial will take place in the Riverview Memory Gardens, with Military Honors being accorded by VFW Post #3360.
