Obituary

Marion W. Hammer, age 98, of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. Born in Jewell, Ohio on August 12, 1925, Marion was the son of Carrol P. and Hazel M. (Hollabaugh) Hammer. He graduated from Defiance High School in 1943 and received a degree in Business from Defiance College in 1962.

During World War II, Marion proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. With the Naval Rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class, he received four military ribbons in the Pacific Campaign, including the Invasion of Okinawa.

In 1947 he married Margery G. (Ott) Hammer who preceded him in death. Together they raised six children: Sue McKibben, Barbara (Terry) Cooper (deceased), Jane Hammer, Judy Hammer-Knisely, Raejean (Juan) Echegaray, and Charles Hammer. He will also be sadly missed by his four grandchildren: Tracey (Larry) Kennedy, Jennifer (Chris) Epple, Emily (Corey Thayer) Knisely, and Abbey Knisely; and four great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death is a grandson, Matthew Knisely; son-in-law, Steven McKibben; two brothers, Frederick Hammer and Leland Hammer; and a sister, H. Imogene Walters.

Throughout the years, he was employed by Dinner Bell Foods, Johns Manville Corp., and RDSI Banking Systems. He was a member of Zion's Lutheran Church, VFW Post #3360, American Legion Post #117, AmVets Post #1991, and Eagles Aerie #372.

All services for Marion will be private. Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity, CHP Defiance Area Hospice, or Zion's Lutheran Church.
