Obituary

Marilyn Shook, 82, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2026 at Laurels Nursing home in Defiance, Ohio leaving behind a lifetime of love, devotion, and treasured memories that will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

Born and raised in Gleason, Wisconsin Marilyn grew up surrounded by the values of hard work, kindness, faith, and family. The small-town warmth of her childhood stayed with her throughout her life and shaped the compassionate and caring woman she became. She carried herself with quiet strength, a generous heart, and a natural ability to make others feel welcomed and loved.

As a young woman, Marilyn followed her heart to Defiance, Ohio where she married George Shook and together they built a life centered on love, family, and dedication to one another. Their marriage was a partnership filled with commitment, laughter, perseverance, and countless shared memories through the years.

A devoted Catholic school teacher for more than 30 years, Marilyn touched the lives of countless students with her compassion, patience, and dedication to education and faith.

Marilyn’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and caring friend whose home was always open to others. Whether preparing family meals, celebrating holidays, offering advice, or simply listening with compassion. Marilyn created a sense of comfort and belonging for everyone around her. Her family will always remember her gentle encouragement, warm smile, and the unconditional love she gave so freely.

She found happiness in life’s simple moments - time spent with loved ones, conversations around the table, quiet evenings at home, and traditions shared across generations. Marilyn had a special way of bringing people together and making ordinary days feel meaningful. Her strength carried her family through difficult times, while her kindness made the joyful moments even brighter.

Those who knew Marilyn will remember her for her grace, patience, resilience, and deep love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy not only in the lives she touched, but in the values she passed on: compassion, loyalty, humility, and love without condition.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Ann Leal of Toledo, Ohio, Amie Eitniear, and William (Angela) Shook, all of Defiance, Ohio, 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, sisters Katie Ronis (John), and Jeanie Thom, both of Gleason. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Shook, parents William and Marian DeMesy, brother Robert DeMesy, and sisters Joann Steger and Jackie Wedler, who welcomed her into eternal peace.

Though her absence leaves an immeasurable void, the memories Marilyn created and the love she shared will continue to guide and comfort those who loved her. Her life was a beautiful example of devotion to family, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Visitation is from 11am - 2pm on June 2, 2026 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Services will follow at 2pm at the funeral home, with Pastor Mike Hasselbring officiating.

Memorial gifts in Marilyn's honor can be directed to the family.
