Obituary

Mable R. Spangler, age 90 of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at Trustwell Living Kingsbury Place in Defiance, Ohio. Born May 13, 1933, the daughter of Charles J. and Pearl (Schliesser) Baker. She and her siblings were raised in a two family house, built by their great-grandfather in 1881.

Mable attended and graduated as Salutatorian from Sherwood-Delaware High School in 1951. In high school, she participated in sports, was the secretary of GAA, played volleyball, softball and basketball, making 21 points in one game. She married John J. Spangler, August 11, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Defiance by Rev. Gerald F. Connolly. They were married 55 years when he passed on August 18, 2011.

Their children are Philip "Spanky" (Chris) Spangler of Defiance, Barbara (Jack) Witherell of Toledo, Ohio and James (Lindsey) Spangler of Findlay, Ohio. Grandchildren are Kylie (Tim) Monhollen, Shane (Lacey) Spangler of Defiance, Katie (Josh) Evans, Vancouver, Canada, and Anneliese Spangler (Michael McGroarty) of Akron, Ohio. There are six great-grandchildren, Lexi and Libby Monhollen of Defiance, Everett, Delaney and Avery Spangler of Defiance and Ripley Witherell of Vancouver, Canada, one brother, one sister, and nieces and nephews.

Mable was bookkeeper at Moats Motor Sales in Sherwood, Ohio from 1951 to 1957. She worked at the Bureau of Unemployment Office in Toledo, Ohio, during the summer of 1958, while her husband was Chef at the Inverness Country Club in Toledo, Ohio. She was assistant bookkeeper at Defiance Hospital, Inc. from l959-1963 and then Staffing Coordinator at Defiance Hospital, retiring in 1998. She started sewing as a young girl and was in 4-H for eight years, going to State three times for winning projects. She was a camp counselor at Camp Palmer one summer and was selected to attend 4-H Club Congress in Columbus, Ohio, one year. She also enjoyed gardening, painting, working different word puzzles and enjoyed working crossword puzzles with her husband. She and John also enjoyed bowling, square dancing, traveling, going to the Cincinnati Reds ballgames, antiquing, and genealogy for both sides of the family. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2023 from 2:00 to 6:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 18, 2023 at Schaffer Funeral Home with Pastor Nico Kinner officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverview Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, suggested memorials are to St. Mary's Food Pantry or Trustwell Living Kingsbury Place.
