Lois K. Behm, 92, of Defiance, died Saturday morning, March 11, 2017 at the CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center.
She was born July 20, 1924 in Jewell,Oh. the daughter of the late George and Florence (Nagel) Puehl. She was raised by her Aunts- Mamie and Bessie Nagel. Her mother died a year after her birth.
Lois married Louis H.F. Behm on June 5, 1948 and he died April 13, 1994 A sister Irene died in infancy.
Surviving are cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lois was a member of St. John Catholic Church and graduated from St. John Commercial in 1940.
A graduate of Defiance College in 1946. with a B.S. in elementary education. She was an elementary teacher for 37 and a half years in Brunnersburg, Holgate and at Defiance Brickell retiring in 1981. She taught 27 years at Brickel. Lois said of meeting her former students "It's fun, always seeing people I had in school, I consider them my kids."
She and her husband had the St. John Catholic Church announcement marquee sign built in 1973 and placed messages in it for 30 years She was also a Eucharistic minister and lector for 13 years.
She was a charter member of the Alpha Eta Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teachers sorority. She initiated the Omega sign for members grave stones used nationally and internationally.
Because of her commitment to education and a desire to help others, she sponsored several scholarships to young women and working adults at Defiance College. She was a member of the Defiance College Alumni Executive Board.
Lois was a life member of the National, State and local retired teachers organizations. Historian of the Defiance County Retired teachers.
A member of the American Association of University Women, 55 plus club, St. Johns Seniors, Defiance Historical group, Moose, American Legion Auxiliary # 117 and past chaplain, Red Cross and past chairman of the Hospital Red Cross Volunteers for 24 years, YMCA, Red Hats, Retired Teachers Association and the Defiance Senior Center.
Lois and her husband traveled a lot and visited about 12 countries. She loved to read in her spare time.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2017 in St. John Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father John Stites.
Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home. Alpha Delta Kappa will conduct services 7:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Visitation will also be an hour before the services Tuesday at the church.
Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens.
