Josephine "Jo" Polk, age 74 of Defiance, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Parkview Medical Center in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She was born on October 4, 1948 to the late Leonard and Anita (Gonzales) O'Neal in Sherman, Texas. On September 23, 1978 she married Thomas Polk who survives. Jo was the former director of The Skylark Youth Center, where she was affectionately known as "Grandma Jo". She helped anyone in need including her elderly neighbors for years. She spent many years as a Girl Scout Leader, and she enjoyed reading and crafts. Jo was a very giving person and will be sadly missed by her family and many good friends. Jo is survived by her loving spouse of 44 years, Thomas Polk of Defiance, her son, David Brown of Defiance, and her daughters, Mary Scott and Cathrine (Adam) McDowell, all of Defiance. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, her brothers, David O'Neal and Jesse Ortez, and sisters, Rosie O'Neal and Maryann Stuebinger. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Johnny Ortez. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 9, 2023 from 2:00-4:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 South Clinton Street) in Defiance. A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 4:00 pm at the funeral home, with Rev. Isaac Shelton Jr. officiating. Memorials are suggested to The Red Cross.
