John N Rice, 71, of Defiance, formerly of Elmira, NY passed away on  Friday, August 2, 2013 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, NY.

He was born on April 12, 1942 to Gerald and Catherine (Hardter) Rice in Elmira, NY.  On June 15, 1979 he married Lanora (Boday) Rice.

John was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.  He worked at Stoneco Stone Quarry and Manufactured Housing Enterprise in the Defiance area and previously worked for US Steel in Elmira Heights, NY.  After retirement he enjoyed woodworking and bowling.

John is survived by his loving spouse,  Lanora,  daughters, JonNeita Chaaple of Canton, PA, Susan (Darrel) McNeeley of Defiance, step-son, Edward (Victoria) Marihugh Jr. of Los Lunas, NM, 7 granddaughters, 11 great grandchildren and a sister, Linda Meyers of Pine Valley, NY.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Edward Marihugh III.

A private graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery with Pastor Donald L. Luhring officiating.
