John R. "Johnny" Johnson, 69, of Defiance, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on February 17, 1949 to the late Robert and Bertha ( McPherson) Johnson in Paulding, Ohio. On July 28, 1987 he married Peg (Davis) Johnson, who resides in Defiance.
John proudly served our country in the U.S. Army, and while in Vietnam he worked as a dog trainer. He was a lifetime member of VFW #3360. John was a truck driver for Nafziger Ice Cream, and later Viking Trucking. He enjoyed cooking, working outdoors, landscaping, gardening, traveling, and reading. In his leisure time he also enjoyed woodworking, making tables, rocking chairs, horses, and cabinets. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. John will be greatly missed by his wife of 31 years, Peg Johnson of Defiance, daughter, Amy (Brian) Callan of Defiance, his grandchildren, Will and Ella Callan, sisters, Julia (Glen) Deatrick of Payne, OH, and Janet (Flonnie) Posey of Defiance, and brother-in-law, Mike (Alanea) Davis of Elmore, OH, nieces Andrea, Sarah (Brian), Stacey (Todd), Wendy (Tony), Jenny (Tim), Clare, Chelsea, and Emma (Jeff), and nephews Joe and Luke, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held from 2-8 pm on Monday, February 18, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 19th at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Deacon Jeff Mayer officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, with military graveside rites accorded by VFW #3360. Memorials are suggested to CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center, Fort Defiance Humane Society, or St. Mary's Food Pantry. Online condolences can be given at www.Schafferfh.com.
