Obituary

James Lee Snyder, 84, of Defiance, passed away with his family by his side on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at his home in Defiance.

He was born on October 19, 1942 to the late Carl and Mary (Buschur) Snyder in Piqua, Ohio, and was a graduate of Celina High School. On January 27, 1962 he married Connie Smelser, who preceded him in death on January 19, 1998.

James was a faithful and very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and enjoyed singing at events and at other churches. He was a life member of VFW #3360 and The Police Officer's Association. James was a Mercer County Sheriff Deputy, moved to the Defiance area and proudly joined the Defiance Police Department until his retirement in 1986. After retirement he would subcontract for custom woodworking and carpentry projects in the area. He loved his family above all, and was very proud of his children's accomplishments. He will be greatly missed by his family, and many good friends and colleagues.

James is survived by his loving children, Yvonne Dollahan, Adam (Ruby) Snyder, James E. Snyder, Rebecca Snyder, Marie Nessman, Mark Barrett, Emily Montez, and Dan (Diane) Snyder. He also leaves behind his fiancé, Phyllis Barrett, 25 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Mike Barrett, and sons-in-law, Bill Nessman and Nic Montez.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 9, 2026 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 pm at the funeral home, with Deacon James Snyder officiating. James will be laid to rest in Riverview Memory Gardens.
