James E. Herr James Emory Herr, 82, of Defiance passed away early Saturday, October 3rd, 2015, at home surrounded by family. He was born in Defiance, Ohio on February 15, 1933, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Keller) Herr. He married Alta Frances Elchinger on June 2, 1956, she preceded him in death January 9. 1999. A lifelong resident of Defiance, he was a loving husband, friend, a wonderful father and enjoyed church, family, golf and all sports. An active member of St. Michael's, St. Mary's and St. Patrick's of Bryan, Catholic Churches. He served in the U.S. Army Airborne from May 1953 till May 1955. He worked at Dinner Bell in maintenance until closing and then worked at Paulding County Hospital in maintenance until retirement in 2000. A life member of VFW Post #3360, AMVETS, Eagle's and Jewel American Legion. He is survived by daughters: Joni (Brad) Smith of Hillsdale, MI, Kathy (Michael) Froelich of Defiance, Kelly (Kevin) Shannon of Defiance. Beloved companion Mary Coyler of Bryan and family. sisters: Katherine Bobilya of Ft. Wayne, Rose Slocum of Ft. Wayne brother: Bernard (Dorothy) Herr of Defiance. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, wife Frances of 43 years, sisters: Mary Leopold, Helen Diehl, Betty Smith, brothers: John Herr, Joseph and Leo Herr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at at St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6th, with Father John Stites officiating. Friends are invited to call Monday 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday 11:30 -12:30 at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home 1753 S. Clinton St. Defiance, OH. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
