James F. "Jim" Hammersmith, 86, of Defiance, Ohio passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold, Ohio.

He was born in Evansport, Ohio on October 1, 1939 to the late Ralph and Nellie (Little) Hammersmith. Jim was a 1957 graduate of Ayersville High School and was a proud member of the 1957 State Championship basketball team. On August 12, 1957 he married Joan Wichman at St. John Catholic Church in Defiance. He worked as an electrician at General Motors for 30 years until his retirement in 1995. Jim was a life-long farmer and had a true passion for working on his farm. He was very active in the UAW Local #211 Union, and held many elected positions over the years. He enjoyed camping, traveling, playing cards and dominoes, and playing basketball with his grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Joan Hammersmith, his daughters, Deb (Dan) Gerken, Vickie (Bob) Hoschak, Shellie (Randy) Engel, Jamie (Jesse) Luna, and Lisa (Howard) Puehler, and his son, Fred (Sherri) Hammersmith. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, sister, Terry Hohenberger, and brother, Gene Hammersmith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings and his grandson, Scott Hammersmith.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 from 9:00 am till 11:00 am at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 11:00 am at St. John Catholic Church, with Fr. Dave Cirata officiating. Jim will be laid to rest at Riverview Memory Gardens.
