Irene Sarah MacDonald, nee Carroll, 90, of Koerber Drive, Defiance, passed away on  Thursday, April 11, 2013 after an extended stay at VanCrest of Holgate Nursing Home, Holgate, OH.

Irene was born on September 24, 1922 to Robert and Barbara (Burkhart) Carroll in Defiance, OH. and was a 1940 graduate of Defiance High School.  She was married to Roger B. Mac Donald, Jr. on June 12, 1943 in Jackson, Mississsippi.

Irene worked from 1943-1963 as a clerk-typist for the State of Ohio, Division of Aid for the Aged, followed by six years as the secretary for the Defiance County Chapter of the American Red Cross.  In 1968 she became the Business Manager for the Maumee Valley Guidance Center and remained there until her retirement in 1980.

Irene was Past President of the Twin Rivers Garden Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club and Alpha Zeta Beta Sorority.  She was also a member of the BPOE Ladies Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Friends of the Library and the Defiance College Women's Committee.  Through the years Irene was a very active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and their Altar Society.  Her great passion in life was gardening and she loved books.

Irene was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Roger, her parents, her sisters, Beatrice Carroll and Mildred Tobias, brothers, Earl, Herbert and Paul Carroll..

She is survived by her sister, Helen Fenter of Defiance, brother, Robert Carroll of Ft Wayne, IN, Sisters-in-law, Mary Carroll of Ft. Wayne, IN, Margaret McDonald of Norwalk,  Rosemary Thatcher of VanWert, Elizabeth Parish of Defiance, Mary Carroll of Defiance and 29 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Monday, April 15 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fa. Randy Giesige officiating.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial donations made to the American Red Cross or the St. Mary's Catholic Church Altar Society.

The family  wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Van Crest of Holgate Nursing Home in Holgate, Ohio who cared for and loved Irene for the past three years.
