Herbert "Herb" W. Zipfel
Herbert "Herb" W. Zipfel, 85, of Evansport, Oh. died Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born in Tiffin Township, Defiance County, on November 15, 1923, he was the son of the late William and Anna (Batt) Zipfel
On Oct. 4, 1942 he married Marian V. Partee who preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 2001.
He was a retired mechanic from Campbell Soup Co. and drove school bus for Northeastern Local Schools, both for 30 years.
To the best of our knowledge he was the last known surviving POW in Defiance County of WW II.He was a prisoner of war in Germany for 11 months. He was a togglier in the Army Air Corp, Veteran of World War Two and a purple heart recipient. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and DAV.
Surviving are two daughters: Sandra (Gary) Carnahan of Defiance and Susan (Larry) Mekus of Hamilton, Indiana
three Sons: William Zipfel of Cincinnati, Michael (Rita) Zipfel of Defiance and Stephen (Janet) Zipfel of Defiance.
Also surviving are tw sister-in-laws: Irene Zipfel of Defiance and Diane (Partee) Millerof Louisville, Ky.; a brother-in-law Dale Partee of North Carolina.
14 grandchildren: Elizabeth (Steve) Anders, Matt Zipfel, Anna Zipfel, Phillip (Judy) Knape, Kirk (Robin) Knape, Kelly (Doug) Burnett, Tamara (Guy) Westfall, Cassandra (Elias) Jimenez and Mark Carnahan, Jennifer (Todd) Moser, Penny (Brian) Denomme, Brandy, Kate and Alison Zipfel and 28 great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by brothers: Carl Hesselschwardt, Howard Zipfel and Daniel Zipfel.
Service at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, at 11:00 A:M on Saturday, October 31st, .
Visitation is Friday night from 6-9 .
Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens mausoleum where VFW Post # 3360 will conduct honorary military rites.
