Herbert J. Fessel Herbert J. Fessel, 85, of Defiance, passed away Sunday evening, May 7th, 2017 at Twin Rivers Care & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Defiance, Ohio on October 22, 1931, he was the son of the late Harry and Laurina (Goller) Fessel. He was a 1949 graduate of Defiance High School and served in the Navy from 1951 to 1954. He owned and operated the former Fessel's Pure Oil gas station, then worked for Brown's Bakery as a route salesman. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a former Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed watching sports. His favorite teams were Ohio State, Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns. He was a member of the VFW. He enjoyed eating, camping and family. Herb married his loving wife Clara (Kruse) Fessel July 21, 1989 who survives. Also surviving are daughter: Barbara (Charlie) York of New York sons: Steven Fessel of the state of Florida, David (Joanne) Fessel of New York, Bruce (Lucy) Fessel of New York, step son Wayne Lumpkins of Defiance, step daughters: Delilah Lumpkins of Napoleon, Kelly (Rod) Derrow of Defiance, Shelly Rigg of Defiance, Lauren Rigg of Defiance sister Mary Page of Florida, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents. Services at St. John Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 11th, with Rev. Donald Luhring officiating. Visitation is Wednesday 6-9 p.m. at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home and Thursday 10- 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery where Defiance VFW Post #3512 will conduct honorary military graveside rites.
