June 26, 1927 – December 22, 2017
Harold E. "Shorty" Walters, 90, of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born on June 26, 1927 to Donald and Lena (Ducatt) Walters in Defiance. Shorty was a 1945 graduate of Ayersville High School. In 1949 he married H. Imogene (Hammer) Walters, who preceded him in death on September 17, 2005. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. Shorty was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Defiance. He drove a delivery truck for CocaCola in Defiance, and drove a bulldozer for Lawrence Greenler and Kendall Mansfield. He also worked with his brother building houses around the area. He worked for over 33 years at General Motors, retiring in 1986. After retirement he picked up furniture for Ken's Furniture, and drove cars for Jim Schmidt and Beckman's. He enjoyed cruises, hot air balloons, semi trucks, draft horses, and he loved to drive. He was a 5:00 pm regular at the northside McDonald's. Shorty loved his family, and spending time with them was a priority. He never met a stranger, Shorty was a friend to everyone.
Together during their marriage of 56 years, Imogene and Shorty raised five children: Gary (Jane) Walters of Defiance, Russell (Laura) Walters of Defiance, Hazel (Scott) Keck of Defiance, Linda (Neil) Trausch of Bryan, and Sharon Flint of Defiance, 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way, and a special friend, Betty Hughes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Imogene Walters, brothers, Rolland Walters and Wayne Walters, sisters, Laverne Etter and Marian Breneman.
Visitation will be held from 2-8 pm on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, and one hour prior to service at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 30th, at Ayersville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Robert Fry officiating. Burial will follow the service at Ayersville Cemetery.
