George Asa Essex, age 91 of Defiance, peacefully passed away on June 28th, 2026, at Glenn Park Assisted Living in Defiance, Ohio. He was born on March 27,1935 to Lawrence and Margret (Burgess) Essex in Defiance. On January 10,1954 he married Ann (Rickerd) Essex, who preceded him in death after 71 years of marriage.
George went to Defiance High School and served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the Defiance VFW Lodge Post 3360. For over 66 years, George was a proud member of Local 50 Toledo Plumbers and Pipefitters and was well-known and respected for his work as a plumber and pipe fitter. He spent many hours on the road working away from home supporting his family and co-workers within the Union Trade. George was always known as a "people person" and loved to talk with everyone he met. His sense of humor was legendary. He loved hunting and fishing, especially with other family members and friends. George and Ann were members of St Paul’s Lutheran Church for over 70 years. He will be sadly missed by his family and many good friends and colleagues both past and present.
George is survived by his son Bruce Essex, grandson Shane (Misty) Fleetwood, great grandchildren: Madison and Justin Fleetwood and numerous nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister Edna (Essex) Johnston, brothers Bob Essex, Albert Essex, Ray Essex, and daughter Karen Essex.
Visitation will be held on July 16th, 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. A funeral service will be held on July 17 th at 11:00 am at the funeral home, with Pastor Dave Brobston officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.
