Gary Mast, age 80 of Cecil, Ohio, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, October 19, 2026.
He was born in Defiance County to the late Gerald and Susan (Kern) Mast. On October 24, 1970, he married Marjorie Curtis, the love of his life. Together, they built a life in Cecil, Ohio, where they raised their four children: Gary (Laurie), Jason, George (Julie), and Renee.
Gary was a man who dedicated his life to providing for his family, working tirelessly to give them everything he could. Generous to his core, he was always willing to share what he had or lend a helping hand to someone in need. His love for Marjorie was constant and unwavering-a quiet, steady devotion that his children witnessed through both the good times and the challenges of life. The life they built together was a testament to their enduring love and commitment to family.
He was a proud and loving grandfather to Sam, Westen, Emme, Will, and Madison, finding great joy in each of them. He also leaves behind his sister, Rita (Mast) Leininger of Defiance, and his brother, David, of Defiance. Gary was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, each holding a special place in his life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie; his three sisters, Betty Delarber, Dixie Corwin, and Rose Cantrell; and his seven brothers, Donald, Richard, Francis “Curly,” Ray “Dean,” Dennis “Skip,” Rudy, and Marvin Mast.
In retirement, Gary found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He continued lending a helping hand on the family farm, played cards late into the night while listening to classic country music, and enjoyed visits to the VFW. He could often be found napping on the porch or being driven around the farm with his grandchildren. He was also a notoriously terrible backyard baseball player, often leaving everyone laughing so hard that the game had to be called. These are the kinds of memories that will be cherished for years to come-the ordinary moments that became extraordinary simply because Gary was there.
Gary attended Bridging the Gap Ministry in Stryker, where he deepened his relationship with God.
Though Gary was a quiet man, his life spoke volumes. He showed his love through hard work, generosity, loyalty, and a willingness to help others without expecting anything in return. His legacy lives on in the family he worked so hard to provide for, the grandchildren who brought him so much joy, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
Gary will be remembered for his steady love, strong work ethic, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to family. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the love he gave will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson-Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 22nd at the funeral home. Gary will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.
