Gary J. Leach, age 78, of Defiance, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on February 6, 1948 to Gale and Josephine (Schlegel) Leach in Defiance. He was a 1967 graduate of Defiance High School. Gary proudly served his country in the Marine Corps from 1967-1970. He worked for General Motors for 36 years until his retirement in 2008. On June 10, 1972 he married Carol Navin and she survives.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, VFW Post #3360, Marine Corps League, Defiance Elks Lodge #147 and the Am Vets Post #1991. Gary was a proud Marine who reflected his honor, courage and commitment into his everyday life. He was instrumental in starting the Herman Hesselschwardt #758 Marine Corps League in Defiance. Gary cherished many things in life, especially playing golf with his brother Dick, riding motorcycles and traveling with friends. He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, kayaking, boating, water skiing and snow skiing among other things. He loved to host and enjoyed sharing meals with his family and friends. Gary never knew a stranger. He was a very kind, loving and genuine person who will be missed by so many family members and friends.
Gary is survived by his loving spouse of 54 years Carol, three children, Emily (Adam) Moore of Tallmadge, OH, Elissa (Scott) Siferd of Akron, OH and Jacob Leach of Defiance, four grandchildren, Olivia, Chloe and Eli Moore and Rylin Leach, two sisters, Laura (Tom) Newcomb of Wilmington, NC and Susie Detter of Defiance, one brother, Dick (Janice) Leach of Defiance, many nieces, nephews and cousins, including Greg Brown of Defiance and his best canine friend Luna.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Dan Detter.
Visitation will be held Friday, July 17, 2026 from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance with a vigil service beginning at 2:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, 10:00 am at St. John Catholic Church in Defiance with Father Kevin McGraw officiating. Burial will take place at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Catholic School, Fisher House Michigan (Box 130466, Ann Arbor MI 48113, 2387) or to St. Mary's Food Pantry. Online condolences can be given at www.Schafferfh.com.
