Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Frances (Basquez) Roddy, who was welcomed into God’s loving embrace on July 11, 2026 at the age of 84.

Frances was born on May 3,1942, in Waxahachie,Texas, to the late Guadalupe and Guadalupe (Garza) Basquez. She graduated from Defiance High School and on November 9,1963, she married the love of her life, John C. Roddy. Together they shared many cherished years until John’s passing on April 29, 2001.

A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Frances found comfort and strength in holding her beliefs close to her heart. She was extremely proud to have been the wife of a United States Marine veteran and her appreciation for those who served inspired her to join the AMVETS #1991 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed time spent socializing with friends and family at the Moose Lodge #2094, where she was a member. Frances embraced life with joy and laughter. She loved dancing, fishing, sewing, coloring, working crossword puzzles, and anything related to Elvis Presley. One of her favorite pastimes was venturing out to try her luck at the casino, where she occasionally came home with a winning smile. Frances also had an infectious sense of humor and often said before her passing, “If people aren’t laughing with me, they’re crying and I don’t want them to cry”. Those words reflected the optimism and resilience she carried throughout her life.

In her earlier years, Frances dedicated herself to being a loving homemaker, creating a warm and loving home for her family. Later, she joined Dinner Bell Foods, where she worked as a custodial supervisor responsible for the office areas. She took great pride in her work and earned the respect of those around her through dedication, leadership and a strong work ethic.

Frances leaves behind her daughters, Roxy (Jerome) Snyder of Firestone, Colorado and Deborah Wilson of Montpelier, Ohio; her brother, Philip Basquez of Oakwood, Ohio; granddaughters, Amanda (Tyler) Higgs of Riverview, Florida, Zoeanna Snyder of Firestone, Colorado; and her special companion of many years, David Lang of Defiance. She will also be dearly missed by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends whose lives she touched with her kindness, humor and determined spirit.

In addition to her parents and husband, Frances was preceded in death by her sisters, Janie Alvarado, Mary Hernandez and her son-in-law, Jim Wilson.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Frances’ life during visitation on Monday, July 20, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Schaffer Funeral Home South located at 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance, OH 43512. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m., officiated by Deacon Jeff Mayer. Pallbearers will be: Tom Alvarado, Dave Alvarado, Ken Mack and Tyler Higgs. Frances will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Frances’ honor to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or CHP Home Care & Hospice of Defiance. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, and support shown during this difficult time. Frances’ legacy of faith, laughter, compassion, and unwavering love for her family will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
