Eugene J. Wittler, age 93, of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born May 7, 1932 to the late John and Emma (Ellerbrock) Wittler in Fort Jennings, Ohio. On August 27, 1955 he married the love of his life, Norma L. Hohlbein (deceased).
Eugene was retired from General Motors Powertrain, Defiance. Afterwards he took on various roles ranging from drafting, construction, insurance sales, and community volunteering. He served in the United States Army in Korea. He served on the Richland Township Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance where he was a former usher, and was an active member and past Grand Knight of the Defiance Knights of Columbus Council #1039. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #0715, VFW Post #3360, Elks Lodge #147, and the UAW #211 Retirees. Eugene was a generous and hardworking man and friend to many. He never knew a stranger and would freely offer his time and treasure to help anyone. He enjoyed coin collecting, die cast car collecting, and vintage automobiles.
Eugene will be greatly missed by his sons, Mark (Lisa) Wittler of Medina, OH, and Brian (Michelle) Wittler of Westfield, IN, four grandchildren; Ashley (Eric) Heffinger, Megan (Andrew) Levitt, Bryson and Brennan Wittler, and six great-grandchildren.
He is survived by two brothers, John (Mary Lou) Wittler and Robert (Joyce) Wittler, all of Delphos, and sister-in-law Jane Wittler of Fort Jennings (widow of Leroy). He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Elmer (Lucille), Norman (Norma), Leander (Rosie), Harold (Bea), Kenneth (Carol), and Leroy Wittler; and two sisters, Rita (Merle) Will and Eileen (Daniel) Calvelage.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 20, 2026 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a Rosary Service with the Knights of Columbus at 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 21st at St. John Catholic Church, with Fr. Dave Cirata officiating. Eugene will be laid to rest at 2:00 pm at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Ottoville, Ohio with Military Honors.
