Obituary

Edward Albert Hohenbrink, age 85, of Defiance, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday morning, October 22, 2026 at The Meadows of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ohio.

He was born on December 5, 1940, in Fostoria, Ohio to the late Norbert and Eileen (Giesige) Hohenbrink. Ed was a graduate of Defiance High School and continued his studies at Defiance College where he earned his bachelor's degree in education. On August 8, 1978, he married Shirley Retcher-Vogelsong, who survives, and they recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.

Ed had a diverse professional career which included owning Culligan Water Systems for many years, but he was most proud of his 26 years of teaching Physics, Chemistry, and Calculus at Antwerp High School. Ed made a lasting impression with many of students with his innate ability to challenge their limits and stimulate their minds. He enjoyed watching his students go on to lead successful lives. After retiring from teaching, Ed remained busy as he began to purchase and renovate multiple single-family homes that became his rentals. Ed was incredibly talented in the construction field and lent these talents to many family members and friends as he was always willing to help someone with their home projects too. In his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, bike riding, and being on his sailboat at Lake Erie. Ed was proud of his family and always made family gatherings more enjoyable with his dynamic personality and laughter. He will be greatly missed by his family, many good friends, and colleagues.

Ed is lovingly survived by his wife, Shirley Hohenbrink of Defiance, his daughters, Renee (Chris) Donnelly of Methuen, Massachusetts and Tammy (Joel) Busch of Defiance, along with his son, Rob (Ann) Vogelsong of Bryan, Ohio. He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Gemma, Charlotte, and Jack Donnelly, Alyssa Romanko, Raeanne Wirrig, Emily O'Bryan, and Shea Vogelsong, and his sister, Linda (Jim) Bernicke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Eileen Hohenbrink.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2026 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson-Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 2nd at St. John's Catholic Church, with Father John Stites officiating. One additional hour of visitation will be held prior to the service at the church.

Those wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to St. John's Catholic Church.
