Donald W. Sanders, 95, of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Promedica Defiance Regional Medical Center.
He was born on November 6, 1920 to Oscar and Clara (Carpenter) Sanders in Defiance. Donald served our country in the US Army during WWII in the Philippines. On September 21, 1946 he married Freda (Gecowets) Sanders, who resides in Defiance. After returning from the Army, he worked at S&K Hand Tool in Defiance. Donald worked for the U.S. Post Office in Defiance for 32 years, retiring in 1983.
Donald was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Defiance, The American Legion #117, VFW #3360, and Defiance Eagles #372. He enjoyed bowling, bird watching, and was a huge fan of the Cleveland Indians. Don's smile will be missed by so many.
Donald is survived by his loving spouse of 70 years, Freda Sanders of Defiance, daughter, Debra Sommerfield of Shelbyville, Indiana, son, Dennis (Gail Allen) Sanders of Minden, Nevada, grandson, Dennis C.A. Sanders of Carson City, Nevada, and sister, Brenda Ulum of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Wanda Highland, brothers, Gerald Sanders and Robert Sanders, and son-in-law Stephen Sommerfield.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Pastor Jim Brehler officiating. Burial will take place at Sherwood Cemetery.
