Obituary

Donald J. Heilshorn, 91, of Defiance, passed away on  Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at his home. He was born on March 17, 1924 to Orville and Christina (Groh) Heilshorn in Junction, Ohio. In 1946 he married Ida Lois Grimes,who proceeded him in death in 1980. In 1984 he married Marjorie J. Myers, who passed away in 2011. Donald was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Defiance. He served as a Trustee, and was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class. He was a Life Member of VFW Post #3360 and its Honor Guard. Donald worked at Zeller Corporation from 1945 to 1949, and for 36 years at General Motors in Defiance as a security guard, retiring in 1982. Donald was a WWII  US Army Veteran, serving from 1943 to 1945. He supervised the gun crew of a 40 mm anti-aircraft gun. He gave instructions as to line of fire, and systematic loading and firing orders. He served overseas for 22 months in England, France, and Germany. Donald was an avid fan for the Defiance Bulldogs, Ohio State, and Detroit Tigers. He was known as "Mr Fix-It" who loved his family, his church family, and he never met a stranger. Donald is survived by his daughters, Deb Bowers and Jill (Rick) Krutsch, sons, Mike (Cindy) Heilshorn, and Alan (Berne) Heilshorn, all of Defiance, stepsons, Jeffery (Barbara) Franz of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Steven (Rose) Franz of Lima, Ohio, and Thomas (Angiala) Franz of Napoleon, stepdaughter, Mary (Stephen) Sulzer of St. Charles, Missouri, 23 Grandchildren, 27 Great-grandchildren, sisters, Ruth Gray of Defiance, and Patricia Christy of Oregon, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Ida L Heilshorn, second wife, Marjorie Heilshorn, grandson, Michael Franz, brothers, Robert Heilshorn and Orville Heilshorn, sisters, Vada Bauer, D'Nelle Brown, and Eileen Cubberly. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, July 20, 2015, at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, Ohio, and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Defiance. Burial will take place at Riverview Memory Gardens. Military Rites will be accorded by VFW Post #3360. Memorials are suggested to the Church Trustees.
