Diamantina Contreras, age 94 of Defiance, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. She was born on August 7, 1929 to the late Apolinar and Zeniada (Pena) Santos in Brownsville, Texas. On April 17, 1946 she married Ignacio Contreras, who preceded her in death on March 29, 1996.  Diamantina was a faithful member of St John Catholic Church and was a member of Virgen de Guadalupe at St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed volunteering at the Food Pantry years ago. Her devotion to her family was an inspiration. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, word search puzzles, and making everyone laugh. Diamantina was a loving mother and a wonderful cook, providing the best traditional Mexican meals for her family and anyone who entered the threshold of her home. She was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Diamantina is survived by her children, Maria (Stanley) Hilton and Emma (William) Davis, all of Worcester, Massachusetts. Jesus Contreras (Sharon Long) of Toledo, OH, and Gloria Turner of Defiance. Left to cherish her memory are 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Ignacio Contreras Sr., her sons, Ignacio Contreras, Jr., and Roberto Contreras and her daughter, Sylvia Cooke. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, March 1, 2024 at St. John Catholic Church, with Fr. Jason D'Souza officiating. Diamantina will be laid to rest at Riverview Memory Gardens. Memorials are suggested to the American Kidney Foundation.
