Bertha  Sproul, 100, of Defiance, passed away on  Monday, May 27, 2013 at The Laurels of Defiance.

She was born on September 10, 1912 to Bert and Laura Etta (Hall) Smith in Continental, OH.  On December 3, 1937 she married Byron W. Sproul and he preceded her in death on October 1, 1988.

Bertha was a member of First Presbyterian Church.  She was a 1932  graduate of Mercy School of Nursing, Toledo and was a Registered Nurse at Defiance Hospital.  She was also an auxiliary member of VFW Post 3360.  Bertha was a good business woman - managing the family farm and helping to care for her family.  She was very active at the Defiance Senior Center and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her daughter, Sue (Larry) Sohn of Paulding, son, James (Joyce) Sproul of Napoleon, granddaughter, Jayne Sohn of Grove City, OH and grandson, John (Tamara) Sohn of Columbus, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Byron,  sisters, Lucille Warnement and Muriel Bryson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, at Schaffer Funeral Home with Rev. Eric Peltz officiating.  Entombment will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013 & from 1-2 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 at the funeral home.

The family suggest memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church.
