Bernis Irene Rahmel, age 85, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.
She was born in Washington Township, Defiance County, Ohio on July 15, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Emmett and Anna (Anderson) Beattie. Bernis graduated from Sherwood-Delaware High School in 1943.
Bernis married the late John F. Rahmel on January 26, 1946. She was employed by and retired from Zeller Corporation in Defiance.
Bernis was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church where she held every office of Christian Mothers twice and held the office of President three times. She also arranged the gift bearers for St. John's for many years. Bernis was also a member of the 55 Club and CCL, on Cap Council, held an office for UAW 1298, and was a previous Treasurer of the Democratic Party.
Bernis especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She loved traveling on vacation with them, putting together puzzles with her grandchildren, hosting family holidays, and cooking meals for regular family visitors. Bernis also enjoyed going to Clear Lake, Indiana, and out to dinner after Saturday evening mass.
Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline (David) Hoellrich of Defiance and Beverly (Steven) Warnimont of Napoleon; a son, Larry Rahmel of Defiance; and her brother, Bernard Beattie of Defiance. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Christina (Kurtis) Soltman of Toledo, Michelle (Ryan) Hacker of Sylvania, Chad Warnimont of Perrysburg and Kyle Warnimont of Napoleon; and two great-grandsons, Mason and Isaac Hacker of Sylvania.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John Rahmel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Catholic Church, Defiance, Ohio at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, with Father G. Allan Fillman officiating. Friends and family are invited to call Friday from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance, Ohio. A rosary service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Riverview Memory Gardens. Suggested memorials are to St. John's Catholic Church.
