Bernard  Carpenter Jr. , 82, of Defiance, passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at CHP Defiance Area Hospice Inpatient Center, Defiance, OH.

He was born on June 26, 1933 to Bernard  and Mildred (Hill) Carpenter Sr. in Defiance, OH. On July 28, 1964, he married Mary Hoffman, who survives.

Bernard worked as a construction worker with Union Local 500 and was a member of VFW Post 3360 Dad's Club, Eagles Aerie 372, and AMVETS Post 1991, all of Defiance. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and traveling.  Bernard also served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 - 1955.

Bernard is survived by his loving spouse, Mary J. Carpenter of Defiance, OH, 2 sons, Robert L. (Dawn) Carpenter of Defiance, OH, and Michael (Teri) Carpenter of Marshall, TX, 2 daughters, Pamela Blythe of Toledo, OH, and Debra (Richard) Adams of Cecil, OH, 9 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, and a sister, Carolyn Gnat of Tulsa, OK.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Neil, Robert, and Danny Carpenter, and 2 sons, Steve, and Kim Carpenter.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2016, from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home, Inc., Defiance, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at 1:00 pm at the funeral  home, with Rev. Mike Hasselbring officiating.

Burial will take place in the Riverside Cemetery Veteran's Section, with VFW Post 3360 conducting Military Graveside Rites.

Memorials are suggested to the CHP Defiance Area Hospice Inpatient Center.
