Obituary

Armella  Killion-Schmidt, 94, of  Defiance, woke up with the Lord on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. She was born on February 25, 1921 to George and Elizabeth (Pittner) Steffel in Defiance, Ohio. On November 29, 1945 she married Harold A. (Bud) Killion, who passed away  in 1978. She married Junnie R. Schmidt on May 2, 1992, who preceded her in death in 2004. Armella was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Defiance, St. Mary's Bible Group, the Writer's Group of Defiance, the Defiance Arts Council, Northwest Ohio Rivers Council, and a Charter Member of the Jonn Yotta Club. Armella graduated from Defiance High School in 1939 followed by classes at Defiance College. While Bud was fighting in WWII, Armella was working for the U.S. Defense Department at Zeller Corporation as a Quality Inspector of ammunitions. She was called again to service during the Vietnam War. After 15 years as the top telephone sales person at Sear's in Defiance, she retired her working career. Armella spent a lifetime writing poetry, a collection of which was published in a book "Pebbles On The Path and Stones In My Shoe". She was a published author of two additional books and many short stories and articles. She hosted Defiance Remembers for Defiance TV Channel 5 for many years, having been an active participant living through those special years. Armella loved the rivers around Defiance, raising her children to continue her passion. When not writing, she spent many hours polka dancing in the area, and playing piano. Armella is survived by her three sons, Allen (Nancy) Killion, Joseph (Patricia) Killion, and Matthew (Cindy) Killion, all of Defiance. She is also survived by stepchildren, Ron (Rita) Schmidt, Jeff (Bernice) Schmidt, Sheree (Dorfmeyer-Schmidt) Spencer, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved tremendously. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Herman and Victor Steffel, great-grandson Sean Golema, and a stepson Frederick Schmidt. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, Ohio, with a Vigil Service at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 noon on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance, with Fr. Randy Giesige officiating.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
