Alberta "Bertie" L. Vogel, age 92 of Defiance, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, July 15, 2024. Born in Defiance, Ohio on August 17, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Rose (Carroll) Spangler. On May 12, 1956 she married Wilbur H. Vogel, who preceded her in death on September 17, 2008. Bertie was a faithful member of St Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed her involvement with Altar-Rosary Society. Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and Noodle Club. She was a Brownie Leader and a Den Mother with the Boy Scouts. She was a past member and officer of Catholic Ladies of Columbia, and a member of Ayersville Homemakers Club. She also volunteered at St. Mary Catholic School. Defiance Board of Elections, and the Red Cross. Bertie worked as an Amway distributor for over 60 years, as a clerk and typist in the U.S, Navy Department in Washington, DC, Continental Coffee and Holgate Insurance, and as a cashier for Defiance College. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and loved spending time with her family. Bertie was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered by so many for her selfless service and strong connection to the Lord. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Bertie is survived by her children, Robert (Phyllis) Vogel of Winfield, WV, Rose (Marc) Pessefall of Defiance, David (Teena) Vogel of Virginia Beach, VA, John (Ellen) Vogel of Ayersville,  and Diane (Phil) Bauer of Conway, SC. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Vogel Stone, sister, Madonna Gilgenbach, brothers, Walt and John Spangler, and nephew Fred Gilgenbach. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 22, 2024 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. Dave Cirata officiating. Bertie will be laid to rest at Riverview Memory Gardens.
