Albert R. Mekus Albert R. Mekus, 91, of Defiance, died Sunday, September 18th, 2016 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born in Adams Township, on February 18, 1925, the son of the late Henry C. and Gertrude (Leithauser) Mekus. The 3rd to last of 11 brothers and sisters and the last living. He married Marion (Gutman) Mekus who survives, on June 19, 1947 having celebrated 69 years of true love. He was a graduate of Jewell High School, attended St. Johns Catholic Church and a former member of St. Marys Junction. He served in the Army during World War Two, a life member of Defiance VFW Post # 3360 and a farmer. He was a milk hauler for the Swift Co. for many years. Retired from Johns Manville in 1990. Albert will be missed by his wife Marion, sons: David (Karen) Mekus of Jewell and Michael (fiancé Regina) Mekus of Holgate. 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and sister in law Doris Mekus. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Richard, Ambrose, Florian, Robert and Justin Mekus, five sisters: Rosemary Flaherty, Germaine Moser, Leola Hostettler, Pauline Custer, Dolores Batt and a great grandson Eli. Albert loved all the time spent with his family and they enjoyed all the stories he told. His prayer life was very important to him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church the Ridge at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 22nd. with Father John Stites officiating. Visitation is 3 - 9 p.m. Wednesday at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be Thursday 10-11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church prior to services. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center, St. Michael's Ridge or St. Johns Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Michael's Church Cemetery.
