Obituary

Alan D. Deatrick, of Defiance passed away on February 16, 2023, at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center after injuries sustained in an accident.

He was born on January 25, 1947, to the late Donald and Marian (Bidlack) Deatrick in Defiance, Ohio. Alan was a 1965 graduate of Defiance High School. On December 13, 1986, he married Cheryl (Mansfield) Deatrick, who survives.

Alan worked as a millwright for General Motors Powertrain for 38 years until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Defiance. Alan loved his many Labrador Retrievers, and also enjoyed camping, kayaking, scuba diving, and riding his snowmobile, motorcycle, and road bike.  He truly enjoyed any outdoor activity, which often involved any type of home improvements.

Alan is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Deatrick of Defiance, his sons Jason (Erin) Deatrick of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Justin (Carrie) Deatrick of Loveland, Ohio, his daughter, Jessica Deatrick (Chris Healy), stepdaughters, Trisha (Ed) Deible and Kristen Nusbaum, and stepson, Rex Andrews (Cristi Ayers), all of Defiance. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, his brother, Brian Deatrick of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, sister-in-law, Patricia R. Deatrick of Defiance, brother-in-law, Stan Mansfield of Cloverdale, and his loyal dog, Moses.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Colleen Deatrick, brothers, Dan Deatrick, and Tony Deatrick, sister-in-law, Bonnie Mansfield, and son-in-law, Jim Nusbaum.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023 from 3-7 p.m. at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance, with a Rosary Service at 3:00 pm.  A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 20, 2023 at 11:00 am also at Schaffer Funeral Home South, with Deacon Mark Homier officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Defiance.

Alan will be missed beyond measure by his family and friends.
