Sylvester W. Longsmith, 93, of Defiance, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Mercy West Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He was born on September 10, 1925 to Samuel and Clara (Retcher) Longsmith in Defiance. Sylvester proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a 3rd Class Motor Machinist. On April 14, 1951 he married Marjorie (Allgire) Longsmith, who preceded him in death on December 19, 2005.
Sylvester was a member of Defiance Eagles #372, VFW #3360, AMVETS #1991, Defiance American Legion #117, and Napoleon Moose Lodge. He worked for Defiance County Highway Garage as a Supervisor, retiring in 1987. In his leisure time he enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, camping, boating, and bowling.
Sylvester will be sadly missed by his daughters, Mary Lou (Paul) Missler of Bryan, and Vickie (the late Bruce) Stuckey of Harrison, Ohio, three grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Longsmith, son, David Lee Longsmith, and sister, Golden Marie Miller.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Dennis Stuckey officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverview Memory Gardens, with military graveside rites accorded by VFW #3360.
