John C Atkins, Sr., 84, of Defiance, passed away on Saturday morning, June 1, 2019 at Glenn Park of Defiance.
He was born on May 1, 1935 to Eugene and Sylvia (Hacker) Atkins in Jane Lew, West Virginia. On September 25, 1953 he married Mary Lou Sandy, who preceded him in death in 2003. John worked as a Police Officer for Defiance Police Department, retiring after 23 years on the force, and also at the Valentine Theater in the projection room in his younger days. He was a member of Masons Omega Lodge #564 in Defiance. John enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, going to auctions, garage sales, and Goodwill, collecting reel to reel movies, and NASCAR cars, especially Jeff Gordon, and handing out candy at Glenn Park. John will always be remembered for being generous, and giving and thinking of others first.
John is survived by his sons, John (Marsha) Atkins, Jr. of Weston, WV, and David (Mary) Atkins of Defiance, 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, and his sister, Sarah Leah of West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Mary Lou Atkins.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Celebrant Deb Miller officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery.
