James R. Gilliam, 78, of Defiance, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2019 at Twin Rivers Care Center in Defiance, Ohio.
He was born on September 3, 1940 to Cecil and Eunice (Justice) Gilliam in Pike County, Kentucky. James owned and operated Gilliam Surveying Company in Pikeville, Kentucky, and worked as a Surveyor and Engineer for several years. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, making knives, and attending flea markets. James was a true animal lover, and will be missed by his family and many good friends.
James is survived by his sisters, EvaLee (Alan) Bird of Defiance, Frances (the late Soloman) McCoy of Ney, and Bonnie (Kermit) Thacker of Florida, his brother, Bobby Gilliam of West Virginia, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Rev. Isaac Shelton, Sr., officiating. Burial will follow the service at Fairview Cemetery.
