Deacon Meyer Obituary

On June 1, 2019, Deacon Donald Joseph Meyer, 81, of Defiance, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 81 at Twin Rivers Nursing Home. Don was born March 2, 1938, in Antwerp, Ohio, to the late Joseph and Edna (Reinhart) Meyer. The family moved from Antwerp to Defiance in 1947. He attended St. John Catholic School and graduated from Defiance High School in 1956. After graduating from high school, he learned the trade of photo engraving in Nashville, Tennessee.

On August 8, 1959, Don married Clara Singer. Don loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed celebrating life events, sports, teaching his children and grandchildren to play cards, and Sunday drives visiting extended family. Being raised on a farm, he continued his love for farming throughout his life. Don served on the Landmark Board of Directors from 1980-1986. Don also loved photography. He began working at the Crescent News in July,1959, in the photography department and later became production manager until his retirement in December, 2003.


Don was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Don was ordained a Permanent Deacon to the Diocese of Toledo on May 15, 1993. He actively ministered in many phases of the church including the RCIA program, baptism classes, and prepared many couples for marriage. He baptized many children, presided over many weddings, and funeral services. He also ministered to the sick and shut-in. Don began the Celebrating Seniors program and served in prison ministry. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1039.


Don is survived by his wife, Clara; sons, David, Mechanicsburg, James (Melissa), Defiance, and Michael, Cecil; his daughters Beth (Earl) Bechtol, Defiance, and Catherine (Jacob) Reineck, Defiance. Don has 21 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and one on the way. Also surviving are his sisters, Sr. Julaine Meyer,Fond Du Lac, WI, and Agnes (James) Timbrook,Defiance. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Joseph, infant daughters,Teresa and Mary, grandson, Christopher, sister, Anne, and brother, Eugene.

Visitation will be at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 510 Jackson Ave., Defiance, Ohio, on Tuesday, June 4, from 2-8 pm and Wednesday, June 5, from 9-11 am. A scripture service will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. A funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John the Evangelist, Holy Cross Catholic School, Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, St. Vincent Mercy Children's Hospital, Nationwide Children's Hospital, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens.
