Betty Jo (Compton) Hancock, 85, of Defiance, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, February 19, 2019 at Glenn Park of Defiance.
She was born on April 30, 1933 to the late Perry and Missouri (Gilbert) Compton in Grundy, Virginia. When Betty was six weeks old her father passed away, and when she was a senior in high school, she lost her mother. Betty graduated from Grundy High School in 1950. On October 29, 1967 she married Ken Hancock, who preceded her in death in November, 2011.
Betty was a member of Sherwood United Methodist Church. When she was young, Betty and her mother ran a boarding house in Grundy where the coal miners came to eat and sleep. Betty and her mother made all the meals. She worked at Lafayette Life Insurance Company in Lafayette, Indiana, at Dinner Bell Foods from June, 1962 until August 1998 when it closed, and at Rainbow Travel. Betty enjoyed life. She loved to cook and make decorated cakes. She lived at Glenn Park and enjoyed visiting with everyone. Betty will be sadly missed by her family and many good friends.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Virginia "Ginny" (Randy) Retcher of Defiance, three stepdaughters; Peggy, Mary, and Patsy, one stepson, Dale, and lots of grandchildren and great-step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and special niece, Laurie Starcher Geston. She loved them all dearly.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Hancock, stepdaughter, Beverly, and her bothers and sisters; Flossie, Bertha, Mae, Charles, Ethel, Hazel, Walter, Ted, and Bud.
Visitation will be held from 1-7 pm on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 25th at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Pastor Kevin Doseck officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverview Memory Gardens.
