Belvia A. Smith, 90, of Defiance, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
She was born on July 12, 1928 to George and Rena (Dillon) Sansom in Harts Creek, West Virginia. On October 4, 1945 she married Henry Lee Smith, who preceded her in death on February 20, 1981.
Belvia was a member of Second Baptist Church in Defiance, and Haines Creek Baptist Church in Florida. She was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Logan, WV. In her leisure time she enjoyed quilting, quilling, and crocheting.
Belvia is survived by her son, Benjamin (Melvina) Smith of Defiance, daughter, Brenda Joyce Bova of Dumfries, VA, 9 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren, and her sister, Beulah McLemore of Hampstead, North Carolina.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Smith, sons, Floyd, Harold, Robert Lee, and Billy Joe Smith, and seven brothers and sisters.
Visitation for Belvia and her son, Billy Joe Smith will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, January 11th at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Drew Gardner and Pastor Max Begley officiating. Belvia's final place of rest will be at Highland Memory Gardens in Godby, West Virginia on Monday, January 14, 2019.
