Arlene Leatherman Obituary

Arlene J. Leatherman, 82, of Defiance died Sunday, May 26, 2019, at Community Health Professionals Area Inpatient Hospice Center of Defiance. She was born on May 18, 1937 in Muskegon, MI, the daughter of the late Clyde W. and Nellie R. (Tatro) Strayer. She attended school in Hesperia and Muskegon, MI. On July 13, 1955, she married Kenneth W. (Bill) Leatherman in Hesperia, MI, and he preceded her in death in 2000.
She is survived by her children Keith (Julia) Leatherman of Woodburn, IN, Darryl (Nichole) Leatherman of Oakwood, and Darla (George) Winnie and Scott Leatherman of Defiance, siblings Wayne (Bette) Strayer and Ronald (Vicky) Strayer both of Fruitport, MI, and Dale Strayer, Muskegon, MI. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Carl, Roy, and Gerald, sisters Myrna and Shirley, and a great-grandson James J. Naugle.
Arlene was an excellent mother, homemaker, and pianist. She completed Ohio Peace Officers training in 1972. She then served as the Oakwood Police Department Radio Dispatcher and as Paulding County's first Patrolwoman. She was a past member of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary in Defiance. Arlene enjoyed camping, crafts, car shows, bluegrass music, family gatherings, and supporting the careers of her four children.
