Vernon R. "Vern" Sweinhagen, age 76 of Defiance, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.
He was born on December 11, 1947 to the late Ralph and Clara Sweinhagen. On July 20, 1969 he married the love of his life Donna Wagner. Together they had a son Rodney who also preceded him in death. Vern was a member of Defiance AmVets Post #1991, Defiance Fraternal Order of the Eagles #372, and Defiance Moose Lodge #2094 where he spent most of his time socializing with friends.
Vern served in the National Guard. He was a construction worker by trade before his retirement in 2012, living life to its fullest. Back in the day he enjoyed riding motorcycles, talking about the excitement throughout the years. Vern was loved by family and many friends. He was there for anyone who needed him, or just an ear to talk with, a pure joy to be around.
Vern is survived by his brothers, Ronnie, Kenneth and Karl, all of Defiance, five grandchildren; Chelsea, Sydney, Mallory (Allen) Carter, Michael "Blaze" and Chaz, and six great-grandchildren; Aylah, Ayvah, Aiden, Xavier, Riley and Ezekiel, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Donna, and his son, Rodney Sweinhagen.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm at the funeral home, with Celebrant Deb Miller officiating. Vern will be laid to rest at Riverview Memory Gardens at a later date.
