Rosa Batt Obituary

Rosa Marie Batt, 96, died Saturday, August 28, 2010 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

Rosa was born November 25, 1913 in New Bavaria, Ohio to the late Peter and Susan (Warnimont) Hesselschwardt. She graduated from Ney High School in 1931. On September 5, 1933 she married Virgil R. Batt, who preceded her in death on January 3, 2001.

Rosa was a homemaker and helped her husband farm for 57 years. Her life was one of service to her church and to the community. She was a member of St. Stephen's [St. Isidore] Catholic Church, Delaware Bend, where she taught Religious Education to high school students for seventeen years. Rosa was a member of St. Stephen's Altar and Rosary Society and she held all the offices during her sixty- year membership. She was also an Extraordinary Minister of Communion. Rosa was a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia since 1941 and was the cheer-lady, sending cards for 30 years. She was chosen Mother of the Year of C. L. of C. in 1993. Rosa was a 4-H Club organizer and advisor for thirty-five years and also worked with the Easter Seal mailing campaign for 25 years. She was on the Red Cross calling and scheduling committee for 31 years and she worked as a Hospice Volunteer for the Caring Way of Defiance County. In 1985 she was chosen Defiance County Senior Citizen of the year. She was known for maintaining the Hesselschwardt and Batt family genealogy records.

Survivors include three sons, Edward (Laurel Minck) of Defiance, Father Anthony of Carrollton, and Steven (Dianna) of Napoleon and five daughters, Valetta (Donald) Keeterle and Barbara (Ron) Krugh of Defiance, Loretta (Lawrence) Dieringer of Wauseon, Rosemary (Basil) Meyer of Bluffton, Ohio and Virginia (Michael) Fenstermaker of Ossian, Indiana, two sisters Cecelia Steffel and Anna Shininger. 40 grandchildren, 88 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren also survive her. She was preceded in death by six brothers, George, Raymond, Charles, Bernard, Clarence (Joe), and Gilbert and three sisters, Cora Batt, Agnes Kunesh, and Matilda Wallen, one grandchild and three great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale at 11:00 Thursday, September 2, with her son Father Anthony Batt officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday 2-9 with a rosary/scripture service at 8:00, and Thursday morning from 9-10:15 at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St. Defiance.
