Virgil L. "Bud" Hasselschwert, Sr., 86, of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at his home in Defiance.
He was born on June 2, 1929 to Eugene and Elizabeth (Bandy) Hasselschwert in Sherwood, Ohio. Virgil was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Defiance. He served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1953. He worked at Dinner Bell Foods in Defiance for 38 years, retiring in 1990, and then he was a maintenance worker at The Laurels of Defiance. Virgil was a member of AmVets #1991, and life member of Defiance VFW #3360 and the Defiance Eagles. He loved family cookouts and drinking beer. He was known as "Bud the Agitator". His ornery grin and sometimes embarrassing sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Virgil is survived by two sisters, Veronica Hicks and Ruth Fritz, and children from marriage with Oleta Hasselschwert: Barb (Jack) Reed, Virgil "Buddy" (Marsha) Hasselschwert Jr., and Connie (Stan) Holbrook, 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Eugene Hasselschwert, sisters Alverda Grussing and Virginia Herding, and brothers Robert, Paul, Charlie, Jim, and Donald Hasselschwert.
A Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 11, 2016 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Fr. John Stites, officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens, with graveside military rites accorded by VFW #3360.
