Ruth E. Shock, 95, of Jewell, passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at The Laurels of Defiance.  
  
Ruth was born on December 24, 1920 to Henry and Bertha (Rettig) Shock in Holgate, Ohio. She worked as secretary to the president of  Defiance College for 27 years, retiring in 1983.  She also worked for fours years at the Veterans Administration Guidance Center after World War II, which was located on the Defiance College Campus,  Defiance County Recorder's Office, City Loan, and Northeastern Local Schools.
   
She was a member of St John United Church of Christ, Holgate, Ohio, where she was past Deacon and Kindergarten Superintendent  and Sunday School teacher.  Other activities included  officer of former Christian League & Women's study group, officer of Women's Guild, member of the Defiance College Women's Commission, member of the Robin Red Breast Cancer support group, and past volunteer for the  Reach to Recovery Cancer Program. Ruth was a  Charter member, past president & secretary of the Community Memorial American Legion Aux#635 in Jewell.  She also organized & participated in the former American Legion Aux Drum & Bell Corps. Ruth had published a family cookbook, "Five Generations of Shock Family Favorites".
  
Ruth is survived by her brothers, Bernard (Jane) Shock of Defiance, Carl Shock of Pahrump, Nevada, and sister, Lois Oberhaus of Jewell, Ohio. 
  
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Howard and Harold Shock; sisters, Ethel Panning and  Mildred Shock.
  
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on  Friday, August 19, 2016 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, and for one hour prior to services at the church.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am  on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at St. John United Church of Christ in Holgate, with Rev. David Orr officiating. Burial will follow at St. John United Church of Christ Cemetery in Holgate, Ohio.
  
Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ in Holgate, Quadco Rehabilitation, The Defiance College,  or to a charity of the Donor's choice.
