Robert H. Layne, 85, of Defiance, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center in Defiance.
He was born on April 18, 1930 to Ollie and Hazel (Hill) Layne in Defiance County. On May 26, 1953 he married Rita (Crumrine) Layne, who resides in Defiance.
Robert was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Defiance. He served our country in the U.S.Navy during the Korean War. He worked as an electrician at General Motors for 33 years, retiring in 1986. Robert was a life member and past Commander of the Defiance VFW Post #3360 and also at the Defiance DAV. He was a member of the Defiance Elks, Eagles, the Auglaize Fox Club, he served as a Defiance Township Trustee, and currently was a member of the Defiance County Veteran's Commission Board. After retiring from the foundry he continued his trade in air conditioning and refrigeration for many years. Above all he enjoyed fishing the most and hunted as well.
Robert will be greatly missed by his loving spouse of 62 years, wife Rita Layne of Defiance, sons Doug (Nancy) Layne, and Tom (Linda) Layne, all of Defiance, Roger (Dawn) Layne of Oklahoma, Dave Layne and Steve Layne, both of Defiance, daughter, Sandy (Ken) McGill of Westerville, Ohio, 16 grandchildren:, Brad (Emily) Layne, Sara (Nick) Sueberling, Kyle (Nicole) Layne, Andy Layne, Josh Layne, Thomas Layne, Jami (Scott) Carter, Nathan (Mallory) McGill, Brennan (Fiance Stephany) McGill, Janelle McGill, Laura (Kenny) Tyler, Michaela Layne, Ethan Layne, Samantha Layne, Brandon Layne, Cameron Layne, Justin Layne, 19 great-grandchildren, and sister Mary Frost of Defiance.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Hazel Layne, and a granddaughter, Alicia Layne.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 1, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Defiance, with Fr. Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery where members of the Defiance VFW Post 3360 will accord military honors.
Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Catholic School, or St. Mary's Food Pantry.
