Mary B. "Bernie" Shannon, 95, of Defiance, peacefully passed away on  Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Brookview Healthcare Center.  
  
She was born on December 18, 1922 to George and Bridget (Smith) Hetz in Defiance. She was a proud graduate of Defiance High School. On September 28, 1946 she married George E. Shannon, who preceded her in death on September 4, 2012. 
  
Bernie was an active member of St. John Catholic Church, and the Altar Society. She worked at Chief Supermarkets deli for several years. She also worked at Defiance City Schools and Zeller's Corp. She was a huge Defiance High School basketball fan for years. Bernie loved the flowers in her garden, and cooking. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandkids.
  
Bernie will sadly be missed by her sons, Mike (Marilyn) Shannon of Bryan, Denny (Kathy) Shannon of Archbold, and Tom (Lisa) Shannon of St. Paul, MN, twelve  grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. 
  
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, George E. Shannon, son, Greg Shannon, brothers, James and Paul Hetz, and sister, Dorothy Meyer.
  
Visitation will be held from 2-8 pm on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a Vigil Service at 2:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 5th at St. John Catholic Church, with Fr Eric Mueller officiating. Entombment will follow the service at Riverview Memory Gardens.
