Janet K. Tobias, 67, of Defiance, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.
She was born on January 20, 1949 to Donald J. and Rita E. (Kelly) Gustwiller in Defiance. On July 3, 1971 she married Richard M. Tobias, who resides in Defiance.
Janet was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a Retreat Leader, and was a member of the Retreat Team, Marriage Encounter Team, Stewardship Committee, Welcoming Committee, and Prayer Shawl Ministry. She also volunteered at the church as a receptionist, money counter, and she taught Religious Formation for several years. Janet was a graduate of Defiance High School and Defiance College. She worked at the Defiance Social Security Office for 39 years, retiring in 2006. Janet loved to travel, and made great memories with her close friends and family. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, and found joy in knitting blankets and crocheting outfits for them. They will miss their Grammy tremendously.
Janet will be so sadly missed by her loving spouse of 45 years, Dick Tobias of Defiance, sons, Michael (Susan) Tobias of Chicago, Illinois, Marc (Sarah) Tobias of Lima, Ohio, and Craig (Reyna) Tobias of Cleveland, Ohio, sisters, Linda (Ted) Feeney of Villa Rica, Georgia, and Joan (Ed) Steffel of Defiance, and brother, Ron (Melissa) Gustwiller of Defiance. She leaves behind seven grandchildren that she loved so dearly; Cammie, Cole, Quinn, Jack, Kate, Landen, and Brielle Tobias, and several nieces and nephews who were so dear to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, James Gustwiller, sister, Judy Machunas, nephew, Todd Feeney, and great-niece, Violet Holden.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a Vigil Service being held at 2:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Defiance, with Father Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens.
